Dragonborn are a relatively recent arrival in the region, first appearing some two centuries after the kingdom’s fall. Most dwell upon The Shattered Isles, where their society revolves around a strict clan system.
Those who live outside the clan structure are known as the Korrash, “the Unbound” in the common tongue. These individuals break from the bonds of clan to pursue glory, honour, or destiny of their own making. The clans do not scorn them outright, but they are judged by their deeds alone: to rise to greatness is to be remembered, while failure ensures one’s name is shunned and forgotten.
All dragonborn must undergo a coming-of-age trial known as the Vorruk Tal (“Seizing the Flame”). In this rite, young dragonborn join a crew or warband and participate in a raid or military campaign. Only those who prove themselves as true warriors are recognized as adults.
The dragonborn are natural sailors and reevers, they infest the coastlines of the region, from the Swamp of Claws in the south, all the way the Bay of Teeth in the north.
The origins of the dragonborn is not well known by even their own people. The skalds and bards amongst them tell of a time of myth and heroes, where the dragonborn were born when a mighty volcano erupted beneath a raging storm. Fire and lightning mingled with the breath of dragons, and from that crucible stepped the first of their kind: a Draknirjar, or Dragonborn.
This belief goes some way to explain their presence in the Shattered Isles. The volcano at the heart of the archipelago, surrounded by tempestuous seas, is seen as a fulfilment of prophecy, an ancestral home shaped for their kind.
Their arrival in the region dates back to 285DE when a great storm heralded the arrival of these fierce reevers that now make up the clans of the Dragonborn.
