Few manaskimmers remain in operation, their rare components make them difficult to maintain and the people who run them have little reason to share their secrets with any person or power on the continent.
Looking like especially ornate ships, the most obvious difference on a skimmer are the large nets in place of sails, with winged booms in place of oars along the sides. A sight to behold in motion with an eerie sense of smooth movement when sailing, they can also briefly function as a regular ship if required.
The main sails on a skimmer are instead made of enchanted, thickly-stranded nets which glow a soft blue when exposed to moonlight, the source of their power, while the winged oars instead catch the natural mana of leylines to travel along defined paths while also providing the ships' manoeuvrability.
Those with the skills to maintain and develop manaskimmers are invariably bound to serve on a ship as few things are truly beyond the reach of a skycaptain, especially those with less scruples. Skimmers act as the single fastest mode of overland transporting without resorting to teleportation, often charging high premiums to transport peoples and goods, and in rare cases, to participate in military activity at the behest of the highest bidder. There can be high levels of experimentation on a vessel, dependent entirely on the available crew and desire of the skycaptain.
Altercations between manaskimmers are practically unheard of, with almost all ships belonging to a bloodline who’ve passed them down for generations, unwilling to risk not only their lives but their legacy on a petty dispute in the skies. This carries even into their mercenary contracts, with an unspoken rule amongst skycaptains that they do not fire on their fellows, who they consider allies of an intangible nation.
The control of a skimmer is typically handed to the heir of the ruling skycaptain either upon their death or if they so desire to retire, with rare exceptions transferring to the First Mate or another suitable position in cases of no alternate clear succession. Many skycaptains see their ships as inextricably tied to their bloodlines alongside their reputation and legacy.
Post Sundering the Veil, the pulse of mana via leylines has connected to that of the Lakesht, other continents, though few crews have travelled far into the Southlands.
