The first sign the Southern Reaches were reachable was an event that came to be known as the Sundering. The magical force barrier above the Basque Mountains was an ordinary sight for residents of the border towns, the soft aurora of the veil evident against the sky above the grey mountain peaks. On the 13th of the 1st, with the rising of the sun, an earthshaking boom resounded across the mountains. The shuddering of the earth could be felt a weeks travel from the mountains, and the soft shimmer of the veil itself was rent to pieces, cascading slowly into the mountaintops.
The veil had long proven immune to the effects and scrying of court mages, and all attempts to research the manner of it's creation and maintenance had been dead ends, and with such a monumental and visceral end to the greatest spellcraft, it certainly had people talking. It is unclear as to when the pass through the mountain reopened, for all eyes seemed to be on the veil itself in those early days.
