The Waylines are Yoren’s global ley line network, remnants of the ancient Echdrassil root-web that once linked the world’s primordial worldtrees. Originally created when the Last Echdrassil extended its roots across the continents to replace its fallen kin, the Waylines carry magical energy throughout the world much like the First Surface’s original root-web did for the Titans.

The Waylines were formed after the Late Choral Bombardment destroyed the Echdrassils, the Titans, and the First Surface, leaving a vast hollow space of dead worldtrees and toppled megacities deep within Yoren's mantle known as the Gravedeep. In its grief, the Last Echdrassil reached downward into this chasm and back upward across the surface, seeding new sprouts and knitting a weakened, secondary arcane network.

During the First Shattering, the Last Echdrassil exploded, becoming the Shattered Spire and giving rise to the Wound of the World and lesser rogue chorus rifts. Though the tree was destroyed, the Waylines survived and continue to pulse faintly with choral resonance. Scholars disagree whether this persistence is evidence of Hallenmyr’s lingering will, a hidden surviving worldtree, or an unknown power within the Gravedeep.

Many magical species, including the Vistora are believed to have gained sentience or anomalous abilities due to prolonged exposure to Wayline energy. Modern mages refer to the Waylines as Yoren’s living leylines.

Wayfarers are named after this network: those who walk the Waylines, guided by the fading pulse of resonance.
