Arvorism (Sal Arvor / โWaterโs Graceโ) is the henotheistic, syncretic faith of the Sarnevalians, centered on Saranaรซ, the Tidemother, embodiment of all waters. Her daughters, the Dewbelles, govern specific forms of water such a seas, rivers, rain, and mist, while land, sky, and elemental spirits are also honored.
The faith emphasizes balance, renewal, gratitude, and ancestral reverence, practiced through shrines, maritime rites, seasonal festivals, ritual cleansing, and offerings. Pearlescer high priests serve as healers, navigators, and spiritual intermediaries.
Arvorism originated in Nevalo during the founding of Xantho Empori, after sailors were saved by Saranaรซ. Though it waned during the Ark Nevalionโs long exile, it was revived after resettlement and became central to Sarnevalian identity again, openly acknowledging other religions as equally true.

Arvorismโs hierarchy is decentralized. The Praywarden, highest Pearlescer, oversees major sea temples, while Tidecallers guide local shrines and rituals. Beyond this, sailor-priests, spirit mediums, and shrine keepers practice independently, ensuring the Tidemother is honored wherever water flows.

Arvorist orders focus on spiritual guidance; martial training is rare.
Pearlescers โ High priests of major temples, interpreters of the Currents, and ritual leaders.
Tidecallers โ Local shamans, oracles, and mid-level clergy under the Pearlescersโ guidance.
Priests / Custodians โ Lay volunteers assisting in daily rituals and festivals.
Most Sarnevalians practice small daily rites: spilling water in thanks, praying before voyages, honoring ancestors, and tending home shrines. Faith informs navigation, seasonal work, and social conduct.
Authority rests with Pearlescers and priests, but all are expected to uphold the Currents. Outsiders are welcomed if respectful; former members may be watched for irreverence, and blatant disrespect in sacred spaces is socially condemned.

Arvorism centers on flow rituals reflecting tides and rain. Daily practice includes Morning Pouring (offering water in thanks) and Evening Stillness (quiet reflection). Major rites occur during High Tide Moons with hymns, sea offerings, and floating lanterns. Atonement may involve Salt Pilgrimages, coastal barefoot walks, or ritual submersion.
Its moral code, the Currents, is unwritten but widely known: respect the waters, honor ancestors, keep trade and oaths clean, and never waste what the sea provides. Pearlescers interpret these laws, while local priests, shamans, and elders enforce them as mediators. Clergy follow stricter purity standards; outsiders are not bound by the Currents but are expected to act respectfully in Sarnevalian waters.

Worship takes place at Arvor Shrines, Temples, and Boat Shrines, most built near or over water, on harbors, cliffs, floating platforms, or within water-carved caves.
Architecture emphasizes flow and openness, using sea-glass, coral, woven sails, and rain-collecting basins for blessings. Maintained by clergy and layfolk, these spaces are kept ritually clean and โawake,โ filled with salt, lotus oil, and the constant sound of moving water to reflect the ever-flowing nature of faith.

The Spiral Wave is the holiest symbol, embodying the endless cycle of tides and rebirth. Pearls represent wisdom born of pressure, coral branches symbolize unity, and silver shells mark offerings returned to the sea. Sea-teal signifies purity and renewal, while deep indigo reflects the unfathomable depths of Saranaeโs grace. Many wear driftglass charms etched with the Dewbellesโ sigils to ensure safe passage and calm waters.

At the center of Arvorism stands Saranae, the Tidemother: a radiant serpent-woman whose many arms embody the seaโs mercy and fury. From her waters came the Dewbelles, her daughters, each reflecting a facet of her power; rivers, tides, rain, mist, and lakes.
Legends tell of Saranae guiding the Ark Nevalion through the Great Storm, parting seas to reveal new lands, and teaching mortals the balance between giving and taking, stillness and motion. Her voice is said to echo through all waters, and her moods shape the tides and weather themselves.

Arvorism traces its roots to Prichordialist beliefs, which hold that the First shattered the endless void, giving birth to Motion, whose heartstrings shaped the many worlds, including Yoren. Within Yorenโs waters, Saranae, the Tidemother, awakened, guiding lifeโs growth and shaping the seas across countless ages.

To Arvorists, death is a return to the current. The soul, a droplet of Saranaeโs essence, flows back into her vast ocean.
Those who live in harmony with her and the Grand Song enter the Eldwave; a tranquil mirror-sea where ancestors dwell, resting or preparing to join the cycle anew.
The wicked or ungrateful become Drifted, lost in stormy waters until the tide forgives them.
Funerals may involve earth or sea burials, or ashes cast into moving water, symbolizing the soulโs homeward passage to the Tidemother.
