Souls first arose within the Three Echoes, planes of change, trial, and contradiction. There, life awakened, born with spectral flames and light, each whispering in the four voices of creation: Order, Chaos, Flux, and, to a lesser degree, Void.
A soul is not mere light or consciousness. It is a fragment of the Grand song. It is the measure of a beingโs attunement with existence itself.

The Clamor and Hymn do not birth souls. Like gods and spirits, their denizens arise from the Chorus, but unlike them, Clamorites and Hymnites are born bound to their realms. They are shaped from the chaos and order that stir within existing souls such as the fey, elementals and mortals, while gods and spirits are freer manifestations of belief given form, and thus possess souls of their own.
The Angels of law and Demons of rebellion are embodiments of their planesโ intent; powerful, yet hollow at creation. Souls may form within them through experience and contradiction, but they are not born with one. Without a soul, morality becomes will, not nature.
An angel may slaughter the sick in mercy.
A demon may shelter a child in pity.
The soul grows not in purity, but in paradox through love that defies law and mercy that breaks commandment. The soul is not a gift, but a burden earned.

When a being with a soul dies; whether mortal, god, fey, elemental, spirit, or renegade angel or demon, their essence unravels and drifts into the Chorus. Souls slain violently may linger as ghosts, revenants or other similar entities, forcing their way back to their native plane. Others can be intercepted by entities within the Chorus before reaching rest.
A soulโs attunement also shapes its fate: Consonant souls (order, compassion, structure) are drawn to the Hymn, dissolving into its choir or reborn as angels. Dissonant souls (chaos, passion, defiance) fall to the Clamor, reforged as demons or fragments of dissonance. Resonant or Flux-bound souls (balance, uncertainty) wander the Wyrd, Kiln, or Aria, reborn or transmuted according to tone.
Souls bound by oath or worship are often claimed by their deities or patrons, while those who serve the Silence may be taken by itโstagnated, hollowed, or erased from existence entirely.

There exists one force that rejects all soul-song: the Silence, the essence of the Hush itself. The Silence cannot truly create; it only hoards or erases, unweaving melody into stillness. In its deepest expression, it reaches beyond emptiness to unmake, shaping "anti-existence", form born of nothingness.
Souls touched by its quiet grow dim, brittle, and voiceless, their resonance fading until nothing remains. Those who stray too far into Silence through dark arts risk being shattered beyond resonance forgotten, erased, or unmade.
