DnD 5e House Rules

Throughout your time here at my table, rulings within the game will be decided based on the core book's RAW (rules-as-written) format, and will be closely followed as much as possible.

However, it is a hard-and-fast rule in the realm of Gamemastering that there are no rules; what is also written in the book is the ability for a Gamemaster to "ignore - or rewrite - the rules in favor of fun". I hold this principle in high regard when I act as arbiter of the game, as my goal is to always provide the best and most exciting experience possible for all of my players.

To build upon this principle, there will be a few "House Rules" that will be in constant effect to help facilitate having a better experience.

House Rules for Gameplay

  1. Be respectful to one another. Allow others to speak in-character and respond to your own inputs, and treat each other with kindness and understanding.

  2. You can use real or digital dice. All of our rolling will take place within the VTTs, but if you choose to use real dice, please be sure everyone has a way to view the result of the roll without manipulation of any kind - this can be a top-down view of your rolling area using a webcam, or through the use of digital dice (GODice, Bluetooth-compatible dice)

  3. Voice chat is required. Though the rare circumstance of being unable to voice chat is possible and acceptable, you must be able to effectively communicate with the other players and the Dungeon Master at all times, as you will more easily convey your character's actions.

  4. Be attentive; take notes if necessary. While it is not required, some of what takes place within the game can be overtly complex or convoluted, so you should aim to give your undivided attention to the game by limiting your distractions in the real-world.

House Rules for Character Creation

  1. All characters must be approved by the DM before play. Character creation may take place within the VTTs, but if your character is available on DnD Beyond, please provide me the link to your character so that I can approve their creation and check that everything is accurate. You may use a printed character sheet as well, available in the Appendices & Extras portion of the Infinity Archives, so long as it is kept updated - you wouldn't want to miss anything important!

  2. Ask your Dungeon Master about allowed content. If the campaign you are participating in has a basic theme or motif, try to craft your character around it. Ask what classes, races, or content might - or might not - be allowed.

  3. Ability Scores are custom-generated. Your core abilities - STR, DEX, etc. - will be determined using a hybrid point buy system that focuses on player agency and depth of roleplay (such as acting out a "low intelligence" character). The parameters are as follows:

  • All of your Core Abilities start at 10. Apply any racial modifiers.

  • Using 15 points, you will raise your Ability Score values at a 1:1 ratio. (Example: 2 points in STR to bring it to 12, or 3 to 13)

  • Optionally, and once only, you may lower an ability score from 10 to 8 and gain 2 extra points to spend elsewhere. (For the hardcore roleplayer, thrill-seeker, or min/maxer)

  • Do not exceed an Ability Score total of 20, per book rules.

House Rules for the Virtual Tabletop (VTT)

  1. Refrain from drawing on the VTT. Though the urge to use the drawing tools available to players and GMs alike might be tempting, please attempt to limit - if not eliminate - their usage, other than to explain a situation by drawing shapes or depictions. No vulgar or profane use of the tool, please.
