The Lysmåne Provinces

"Your money or your life? Hmpf, in Lysmåne they're one and the same"

-Disgruntled dock worker

From the bustling and never sleeping streets of Lysmån to the quiet heartlands. The Lysmåne provinces cover a large expanse of land with different terrains and climates. The people living in the provinces are varied yet unified under one banner. The Bybetheiro runs from the south to the northwestern coast, forming the central waterway through the country. Caravels carrying goods sailing up and down on its surface. The silent golden fields of the heartlands, filled with commoners doing honest work in their daily lives, bringing bread to every corner of the republic. The isles, supplying fish and harboring the naval might, exerting military force upon the waves of the Calnavian sea, exacting a toll from every ship that wishes to travel between them and the Leocor Kingdom.

Society

The Lysmåne republic rules the majority of the middle Domus lands. In the republic, money means power, your social status is directly tied to your bank account. Life is harsh for those who do not have anything to their name, yet for a commoner with a daily job it is mediocre. The court of Lysmåne is cut-throat, since every high ranking position can change on a daily basis. Every bit of intrigue can and will be used by ones' adversaries to raise their ranks within the game. The Merchant-elect Thom DeVriess rules the country, counselled by the 4 representatives from the provinces: Urdensk, Cerellos, Halvaan and the Kilikos Isles.

"To play the game, one must realise how the dance of social interactions works, and most of all one must lead that dance."

-Allita Versala

Despite this changing nature, there is an established order of houses. House DeVriess, Versala and Kethero are the most prominent and oldest houses of Lysmån. They usually compete over which house brings the next Merchant-elect. Whereas the lesser houses are like little dogs, yapping and biting at their ankles. Commoners are the folk who make sure that daily life runs within the republic, ranging from different disciplines of crafts, bankers, farmers and so on. Many are satisfied with where they are now, some are not. They take the risks of trade and set out on commercial enterprises in order to gain wealth. Many a man has ended up in ruin with these risks; bandits, weather and the ever-changing market spare none. Poverty in the main cities is harsh, there is little room for empathy in the urbanised areas. Everyone there is out for themselves, and this has fed the underbelly of the cities. Thieves and beggars formed their networks of crime and care for another. Honour amongst thieves and all. Those who can't bring themselves to take from others are basically left for dead. Kindness is found in the countryside, communities are more close with one another and people weather storms together.

History

Lysmåne was formed by the unification of the two cities of Lys and Mån. Lys was an Avanaran settlement in the land, whereas Mån was a settlement of the The High North. The Bybetheiro river formed a natural border between them and The Triad Dragon Emirates of Avanar. Until the great upheaval, the two coexisted under somewhat tense terms. Northerners were prone to crossing the river to raid the southern part of the lands settled by Avanaran settlers. The silver and iron mined from Lys’ lands were a target coveted by the raiders. When the great upheaval happened and the High North turned more inward with internal fights, the two settlements were left to fend for themselves. An alliance of necessity was formed, later turning to a united vision of rule and power. Thus, Lysmån was formed. Since the newly formed city had valuable resources and crafts which were in high demand after the upheaval, A mercantile society was formed. Money is power, and no-one's price is too high. As the city purchased more land or took it by conquest, the issue of exerting power over the large landmass became an issue. The new budding country set up lower levels of government which answer to the capital.
